cincinnati xavier fight

A fight during the final seconds of the annual rivalry game between Cincinnati and Xavier caused the game to be ended prematurely and left at least one player bleeding.

With both sides already heated from an exchange Xavier guard Mark Lyons and members of Cincinnati's team, the 76-53 rout by the Musketeers over the Bearcats turned ugly in the final seconds of the game. That's when two Xavier players — Dezmine Wells and Atlantic 10 preseason player of the year, Tu Holloway — shoved Cincinnati's Ge'Lawn Guyn to the floor.

That ignited a full-out brawl.

In the ensuing melee, several players on both sides were seen swinging punches as the benches cleared. Television replays showed Cincinnati center Yancy Gates punch Xavier's Kenny Frease in the face and take a swing at another player who had come off of the Musketeers' bench.

After being struck, Frease staggered to the floor only to come up bleeding heavily from the left side of his face.

"That’s what you’re going to see from Xavier and Cincinnati," Holloway said after the game. "We got disrespected a little bit before the game, guys calling us out. We’re a tougher team. We’re grown men over here. We’ve got a whole bunch of gangsters in the locker room—not thugs, but tough guys on the court. And we went out there and zipped them up at the end of the game."

As things were trying to be returned to normal after the incident, Holloway went up to Xavier's beat writer, Shannon Russell and told her to Tweet that, "Xavier put them in an (expletive) body bag."

Suspensions are expected to be handed down by both the Atlantic 10 and Big East conferences.

A-10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade issued a brief statement, via Twitter, saying: "I will review the entire incident from the XU-UC game & take appropriate action together with Xaiver Univ."

A person familiar with the thinking of the Big East Conference said the league is reviewing the incident, along with Cincinnati and that it would time some time to complete the review. The person asked not to be identified because the fight is still being sorted out.

In speaking to reporters afterwards, Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin was furious at what took place.

"There’s no excuse for any of them, on our side, on their side," Cronin said. "Guys need to grow up. There is zero excuse for that in basketball. You’ve got to learn how to win on one side, you’ve got to learn how to lose on the other side."
